Claude Code Pricing in 2026: Pro vs Max vs Ultra vs API
Claude Code isn't sold on its own. You get it through a Claude subscription — Pro, Max, Ultra, Team or Enterprise — or by paying per use with an API key. Picking the right one can easily save you money.
Here's what each option costs as of November 2026, and how to decide.
Quick verdict
Start on Pro if you're trying Claude Code or use it a few hours a week. Move to Max or Ultra if you regularly hit usage limits. Use an API key for automation, CI or very light, irregular use where paying per token is cheaper.
A subscription is best if…
- You use Claude Code most working days
- You want a predictable monthly bill
- You also use Claude chat on web or mobile
- You're an individual or small team
An API key is best if…
- You run Claude Code in CI or scripts
- Your usage is light or irregular
- You need usage billed to a company account
- You want precise, per-token cost tracking

What you get on each plan
All paid individual plans include Claude Code in the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop app and web. The main difference between Pro, Max and Ultra is how much usage you get before hitting limits, with higher tiers allowing far more. Limits reset over time rather than running out for the month.
Team plans add shared billing and admin controls, with Standard and Premium seats depending on how much each person uses. Enterprise adds organisation-level controls and is billed per seat plus usage.
Subscription vs API: which is cheaper?
If you use Claude Code for several hours most days, a subscription is almost always cheaper and easier to budget. If you only use it occasionally, or you run it from scripts and CI, paying per token with an API key can cost less and gives exact cost tracking. Many developers use a subscription for interactive work and an API key for automation.
