Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: Which One Should You Use?

GitHub Copilot is the AI assistant most developers tried first: completions in your editor, chat, and now cloud agents that open pull requests. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that starts in the terminal and works through tasks across your project.

They overlap more every year, and Copilot can even route work to other agents. This guide explains where each one is strongest and how to decide.

Quick verdict

Copilot is the easiest choice for completions and chat across many IDEs, with a cheap entry price and tight GitHub integration. Claude Code is the stronger choice when you want a configurable agent to plan and execute larger tasks locally.

Choose GitHub Copilot if…

  • You want inline completions in almost any IDE
  • Your team lives in GitHub issues and pull requests
  • You want a low-cost plan with a free tier
  • You like choosing between several model providers

Choose Claude Code if…

  • You want an agent that works through tasks step by step
  • You prefer working locally in the terminal
  • You want deep customisation: subagents, skills, hooks, MCP
  • You already use Claude Pro, Max or Team

Where Copilot is strongest

Copilot's biggest advantage is reach. It runs in nearly every popular editor, its completions are fast, and it is built into GitHub itself. Its cloud agent can take a task from an issue or a prompt, work in a cloud environment, run tests and linters, and open a pull request for review.

The pricing ladder is also friendly: a free tier with 2,000 completions a month, Pro at $10, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100, with usage measured in GitHub AI Credits. Higher plans add more usage and, according to GitHub's plan page, the option to delegate work to third-party agents.

Where Claude Code is strongest

Claude Code is built around doing a task, not suggesting the next line. It reads your project, plans, edits many files, runs commands and checks its own work, asking for approval as it goes. Because it runs locally, it works with your real environment, tools and scripts.

Its customisation is the deepest of the major tools: a CLAUDE.md for project rules, subagents for specialist work, skills for procedures, slash commands for repeatable workflows, hooks for automatic checks and MCP for connecting external tools.

Pricing compared

If cost is your main concern, Copilot is cheaper to start: free, then $10/month. Claude Code requires a paid Claude plan — Pro at $20/month ($17 billed annually) — or pay-as-you-go API usage. For heavy daily use both have $100+ tiers. Check github.com/features/copilot/plans and claude.com/pricing for current numbers.

Using both together

A common setup is Copilot for completions while you type and Claude Code for bigger jobs: refactors, migrations, test suites, audits. They don't conflict — Copilot lives in your editor, Claude Code in your terminal or its own extension. Keep shared project conventions documented so both follow them.
